Calibration Services
Mass and Related Quantities: Force Measurements
General
The Force Laboratory of SCL provide calibration services for force proving instruments like load cells, load columns and proving rings. These instruments would be in turn used to verify uniaxial testing machines that are widely used in the local construction industry. The Force Laboratory also provide calibration services for on-site universal testing machines calibration.
The Laboratory is equipped with three force standard machines which are able to generate forces in compression or tension mode at a very high accuracy level for calibration. The four force standard machines have capacities of 5kN, 60kN and 600kN respectively.
The first two (5kN and 60kN) are deadweight force standard machines which generate forces as a result of the gravitational effect from deadweights calibrated at very high accuracy. Both deadweight force standard machines are capable of producing forces at an uncertainty of 0.002%.
The 600kN are hydraulic force standard machine which amplify the forces generated by the 60kN deadweight force standard machine through a hydraulic system. The relative uncertainties of the forces generated are of 0.05%.
The performance of the force standard machines is summarized in the following table:-
Machine Capacity/Type | Applied Force | Uncertainty of Applied Force | Class (ISO376) |
---|---|---|---|
5kN Deadweight | 50N - 5kN | 0.002% | 00 |
60kN Deadweight | 1kN - 60kN | 0.002% | 00 |
600kN Hydraulic | 10kN - 600kN | 0.05% | 1 |
On-site universal testing machine
The Force Laboratory provides calibration service for force testing machines up to 1,000kN. The calibration will be conducted on-site in tension or compression mode in accordance with ISO 7500-1 using standard load cells or other force measurement system which have been calibrated in the force standard machines of the Force Laboratory.
