Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) has developed new calibration services in luminance and optical wavelength, to support the testing and certification industry in Hong Kong. In November 2017, these two new calibration services were successfully assessed by the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) with overseas peer reviewer Mr Huang Xue-bo, Principal Metrologist of the National Metrology Centre (NMC), Singapore.

Luminance is a photometric quantity that indicates the brightness of surfaces observed by human eyes. Luminance meters are widely used by the industry to measure the brightness of displays, road signs, billboards, aviation simulators and theatres, etc. The accredited calibration service can ensure the accuracy of the instrument with traceability to the SI units in the range from 10 cd/m² to 4,000 cd/m².

Wavelength accuracy is particularly important in chemical and jewellery testing. Since the absorption or emission spectrum of each chemical element is unique, calibration of wavelength can ensure the accurate analysis of chemical composition with the use of spectrometers. The accredited optical wavelength calibration service covers the calibration of spectrometers and reference light sources in the range from 250 nm to 600 nm.
