51st Joint School Science Exhibition – showcasing I&T to improve our lives
The 51st Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE) was successfully held from August 22 to 27, 2018. This annual exhibition aims at promoting public interest in science, fostering a healthy exchange of scientific knowledge, and encouraging experience-sharing among local secondary schools and international students.
More than 200 secondary schools were invited to participate, and 21 schools were selected to showcase their projects at the Hong Kong Central Library. The team from St Joseph’s College was named the overall champion, with the winning project “Formaldehyde – No More!” which explored a new way of filtering out the harmful organic compound formaldehyde from household air using crustacean shells.
The exhibition also included exhibits from Overseas Delegates, of which the Indian team was crowned The Most Popular Booth of Overseas Delegates.
Under this year’s theme of “Reflection”, the exhibition demonstrated students’ concerns about daily lifestyles and habits. Although technologies have been improved dramatically in recent years, a number of unfavourable lifestyle habits have been caused, including excessive use of electronic products, waste of energy and health problems. This year’s JSSE aims at raising public awareness of these often ignored hazards, as well as improving quality of live and habits through science and innovation.
